3 and 1 Step Sparring Techniques





White Belt 3-Step Sparring


  1. Step back with the right foot into a left back stance and block the attacker's right inner forearm at the wrist with left knife hand (right hand is in a fist in a chambered position). Step back with the left foot into a right back stance and block the attacker's left inner forearm at the wrist with a right knife hand (left hand is in a fist in a chambered position). Step forward 45 degrees with the right foot into a riding horse stance (to avoid the attacker's right punch) and at the same time move both the right and left hands to the right side of the body so that both hands come together (the left hand is a knife hand and the right hand is a fist). Execute a left knife hand block to the attacker's right inner forearm at the wrist and simultaneously execute a right middle punch to the attacker's solar plexus; then re-chamber your arms by moving them to the right side of the body so that both hands touch, (keeping the left hand a knife hand and the right hand a fist), and execute a second left knife hand block to the attacker's right inner forearm at the wrist and simultaneously execute a right high punch striking directly under the attacker's nose and kiyap.
     
  2. Step back with the right foot into a left back stance and block the attacker's inner forearm at the wrist with left knife hand (right hand is a fist in a chambered position). Step back with the left foot into a right back stance and block the attacker's left inner forearm at the wrist with right knife hand (left hand is a fist in a chambered position). Step forward 45 degrees with the right foot into a riding horse stance (to avoid the attacker's right punch) and simultaneously execute a left knife hand block to the attacker's right inner forearm at the wrist and strike the left side of the attacker's neck with a right inward knife hand strike. Then grab the back of the attacker's head with the right hand and simultaneously grab the attacker's right wrist with the left hand and pull the attacker forward, bring up the right knee to strike the attacker's head and kiyap.
     
  3. Step back with the right foot into a left back stance and block the attacker's right inner forearm at the wrist with left knife hand (right hand is a fist in a chambered position). Step back with the left foot into a right back stance and block the attacker's left inner forearm at the wrist with right knife hand (left hand is a fist in a chambered position). Step forward 45 degrees with the right foot into a riding horse stance (to avoid the attacker's right punch), while bringing the right arm vertical and the left arm horizontal with the left fist (palm down) touching right elbow. Step right across attacker's right leg resulting in a riding horse stance with back.to attacker while executing a right outside-inside block of attacker's right arm. Perform a left backward elbow strike to the attacker's solar plexus (eyes should be on the area being struck) and kiyap.
     
  4. Step back with the right foot into a left back stance and block the attacker's right inner forearm at the wrist wills left knife hand (right hand is in a fist in a chamberedposition.). Step hack with the left foot into a right back stance and block the attacker's left inner forearm at the wrist with right knife hand (left hand is a fist in a chambered position). Step forward 45 degrees with the right foot into a riding horse stance (to avoid the attacker's right punch) and simultaneously execute a left knife block to the attacker's right forearm at the wrist. While stepping across the attacker's left leg into a riding horse stance so that your right foot is between the attacker's legs with your right shoulder toward attacker, grab the attacker's right wrist with your left hand and pull forward. Execute a right backward elbow strike to the rib area, re-chamber the same arm and execute a back fist strike to the head and kiyap.
     
  5. Step back with the right foot into a left back stance and block the attacker's right inner forearm at the wrist with left knife hand (right hand is a fist in a chambered position). Step back with the left foot into a right back stance and block the attacker's left inner forearm at the wrist with right knife hand (left hand is a fist in a chambered position). Step forward 45 degrees with the right foot into a riding horse stance (to avoid the attacker's right punch) and simultaneously execute a left knife hand block to the attacker's right inner forearm at the wrist. Step over the attacker's right leg and at the same time place your right hand under the attacker's right elbow and press right thumb in the crease of the elbow. Also grab the attacker's right wrist with the left hand (still in place from knife hand block), moving the attacker's arm so that the attacker's elbow is at a 90-degree angle. Push down on the wrist while lifting and pulling the elbow towards the chest, simultaneously sweeping the attacker's right leg from behind to execute a takedown. The leg sweep should be done by bringing the back of your knee area to the back of the attacker's knee. The takedown should be done gently while supporting the arm to control the fall. The defender then kicks to the chest with a right sidekick and punches to the chest with the right hand and kiyap.

    Note: Safe Fall Technique The student (attacker) should be taught how to fall correctly to avoid injury. The back should be rounded and neck flexed forward to avoid hitting head. Knees should be bent during fall to minitnize falling distance. The student (attacker) should slap floor with the left palm before any other part of the body hits the floor to lessen impact. The defender should help the attacker up from fluor after the takedown as a courtesy.
     
  6. Step hack with the left foot into a right back stance and block the attacker's outer forearm at the wrist with right knife hand (left hand is a fist in a chambered position). Step back with right leg into a left back stance and block the attacker's outer forearm at the wrist with left knife hand (right hand is a fist in a chambered position). Step forward 45 degrees with the left foot into a riding horse stance (to avoid the attacker's right punch) and simultaneously block attacker's right arm with a left palm heel block (taking care to block the arm below the elbow, near the wrist, to minimize risk of injury). Execute a right punch to armpit area followed immediately with a left punch to the same target and kiyap.
     
  7. Step back with the left foot into a right back stance and block the attacker's outer forearm at the wrist with right knife hand (left hand is a fist in a chambered position). Step back with the right foot into a left back stance and block the attacker's outer forearm at the wrist with left knife hand (right hand is a fist in a chambered position). Step forward 45 degrees with the left foot into a riding horse stance (to avoid attacker's right punch), and simultaneously block with right knife hand, then grab attacker's wrist with same hand. With the left leg, step over attacker's right leg landing in a left front stance while simultaneously striking the attacker's ammit with the area between the thumb and index finger and leaving the hand there to control the shoulder. While pressing down on the attacker's right shoulder, bring the attacker's right hand up over the defender's left arm to open the chest and face. Execute a right knee strike to the chest and kiyap.
     

Yellow Belt 1-Step Sparring


  1. Step to the right 45 degrees with the right foot into riding horse stance (to avoid the attacker's right punch), executing a left knife hand block to the attacker's inner right forearm at the wrist and simultaneously executing a right middle punch to the-attacker's solar plexus, followed by another left knife hand block to the attacker's inner right forearm at the wrist with a simultaneous right high punch to the attacker's head. Step back with right foot into a left front stance while grabbing the attacker's right arm, pulling the attacker forward and twisting his/her arm into a palm upward position, then execute a right middle front snap kick and kiyap.
     
  2. Step to the right at a 45 degree angle with the right foot (to avoid the attacker's right punch) and then bring the left foot to the right foot into feet-together stance (like an attention stance). Execute a stationary jump front snap kick middle with the right foot and land in a right front stance, executing a right middle punch followed by a left middle punch and kiyap.
     
  3. Step to the right 45 degrees with the right foot into a riding horse stance (to avoid the attacker's right punch) while bringing the right arm vertical and the left arm horizontal with the left fist touching the right elbow with the left palm down. Step with the right foot across the attacker's right leg resulting in a riding horse stance with your back to the attacker while executing a right outside-inside block of the attacker's right arm. Execute a left backward elbow strike to the attacker's solar plexus followed by a right backward elbow strike to the attacker's right ribs and kiyap.

    (Note: be sure to see the target when performing the elbow strikes)
     
  4. Step to the left 45 degrees with the left foot into a riding horse stance, executing a palm fist block to the attacker's outer forearm (near the wrist to reduce the chance of injury to the attacker). Execute a right punch to the attacker's armpit followed by a left punch to the armpit. Execute a right roundhouse kick middle to the attacker's solar plexus and kiyap.
     
  5. Step to the right 45 degrees with the right foot into a riding horse stance executing a left outer forearm block to the attacker's right wrist. Step across with your right leg landing behind the attacker's right leg, reaching under the attacker's right elbow with your right arm and grab your own wrist resulting in a 90 degree angle of attacker's elbow. While sweeping the attacker's right leg with your right leg perform a takedown. Execute a right sidekick to the attacker's head and kiyap.
     
  6. Step back 90 degrees with the right leg into a horse stance, resulting in the your left side facing the attacker. Execute a right reverse sidekick middle and kiyap.
     
  7. Step back 90 degrees with the left leg into a horse stance, resulting in your right side facing the attacker. Execute a left reverse sidekick middle and kiyap.
     

Orange Belt 1-Step Sparring


  1. Step to right in front stance, blocking with left knife hand and right punch middle, then block with left knife hand and right punch high. Step back with right leg into front stance while grabbing opponents right arm; pulling opponent forward and twisting opponent's arm into a palm up position, round house kick high with right leg and kiyap.
     
  2. Step to the right with the right leg and then bring left leg to right in feet together stance, stationary jump front snap kick middle, right punch middle, left punch middle, right punch high and kiyap.
     
  3. Step towards right into a front stance away from punch, step across towards left with right outside-inside block against opponents right punching ann. Left reverse elbow strike, right reverse elbow strike (with back towards opponent). Grab opponent's uniform with right hand near opponent's shoulder while grabbing arm with left hand and sweep the leg by stepping back with the right leg into a front stance while taking opponent carefully to the floor. Right leg side kick to head and kiyap.
     
  4. Step towards the left with left leg and block punch with a left palm-fist against the forearm (near the wrist). Right punch to armpit, left punch to armpit, right punch to head, round house kick with right leg to middle section and kiyap.
     
  5. Step forward with a walking stance and block the punch with an outside-inside block. Right backwards elbow strike to the back. Grab opponent's shoulder with the right hand and his/her arm with left hand as it come over the arm, while sweeping the leg with right leg and performing a take-down. Side kick to head and kiyap.
     
  6. Step back with right leg into a horse stance, spinning wheel kick middle with right leg and kiyap.
     
  7. Step back with left leg into a horse stance, spinning wheel kick middle with left leg and kiyap.
     

Green Belt 1-Step Sparring


  1. Step forward with the right foot into a front stance, simultaneously block with left knife hand/right middle punch then simultaneously block with left knife hand/right high punch, step back with right leg while grabbing attacker's right hand and turning it palm up, right front snap kick middle, right roundhouse kick high and kiyap.
     
  2. Inside-outside crescent kick to block punch with left leg, right roundhouse kick high and kiyap.
     
  3. Outside-inside crescent kick with the right leg to block punch, right roundhouse kick high without putting leg down between kicks and kiyap.
     
  4. Step forward with right leg into a front stance, block with left knife hand. Grab attacker's right wrist with left hand. Place thumb into space below attacker's right ear with palm up and cup the back of attacker's head with hand. Perform take-down by bringing attacker's arm up and turning attacker's head under. Right side kick to head and kiyap.
     
  5. Step forward with left leg into a front stance while blocking with a left knife hand block, grab wrist, bend over and grab behind attacker's right ankle and sweep the leg performing a take-down. (Avoid sweeping the leg towards yourself— attacker should fall towards the left side. Right side kick to head and kiyap.
     
  6. Step back with right leg into a horse stance. Right jump reverse kick middle and kiyap.
     
  7. Step back with left leg into a horse stance, Left jump reverse kick middle and kiyap.
     

Blue Belt 1-Step Sparring


  1. Step to right into a front stance, blocking with left knife hand and right middle punch, then blocking with left knife hand and right punch high, right high front elbow strike and kiyap.
     
  2. Hop to right into a closed (feet together) stance, stationary jump side kick middle and kiyap.
     
  3. Step into a horse stance, left double forearm block, right downward back fist to bridge of nose with right hand under left elbow (palm down), scissors right jump front snap kick high and kiyap.
     
  4. Step back with left leg into horse stance with right leg toward attacker, grab wrist of punching arm with right hand, right (front leg) side kick to armpit and kiyap.
     
  5. Step forward with left leg into a short walking step while performing a left outside-inside block to punching ann. Spinning 180 degrees, grab attacker's left shoulder from behind with right hand. Sweep attacker's right leg with right leg and perform take-down. Stomping right side kick high section and kiyap.
     
  6. Step back with right leg into a horse stance (left leg toward attacker), left step hooking kick high and kiyap.
     
  7. Step back with left leg into a horse stance, right step hooking kick high and kiyap.
     

Brown Belt 1-Step Sparring


  1. Step into a front stance with the right leg, simultaneous left knife hand block and right middle punch, simultaneous left knife hand block and right high punch, right forward elbow strike high, left palm heel strike high and kiyap.
     
  2. Slide to the right into a closed (feet together) stance, stationary jump round house kick high and kiyap.
     
  3. Step back with the left foot into a riding horse stance, grab the punching arm with right hand, right (front leg) hooking kick high, round house kick high (over top of arm) and kiyap.
     
  4. Step back with the right foot into a riding horse stance, left inverted ridge hand blOck, reverse right hooking kick high and kiyap.
     
  5. Step back with the left foot into a riding horse stance, right inverted ridge hand block, reverse left hooking kick high and kiyap.
     
  6. Right outside-inside crescent kick to block punch, landing in a riding horse stance, right tornado kick and kiyap.
     
  7. Left outside-inside crescent kick to block punch, landing in a riding horse stance, left tornado kick and kiyap.
